The City that never sleeps, a place that people only dream of seeing with their own eyes. A place where night and day are different worlds, where the city natives transform into creatures of the night as soon as the sun falls behind the skyline. New York, a city that is a charter in its own right, so many stories have been filled within the city walls, and there will always be room for more.
I had been lucky enough to have the chance to work in this great city with the Pratt Institute. One of the great and top ranked creative schools across the world. Tasked by the art, design and fashion departments, I would spend my time capturing the culture and atmosphere of Brooklyn, to help push the heritage of the Pratt and where it started.
NEW YORK CITY
With the mission of what makes Brooklyn the iconic place it is today, I was given the soul task of looking out for the raw, grittiness that previous decades made Brooklyn one of the most visited places in New York City. The Grit, glamour, how this bough stands out to the parts of the city. With the concept of the 80s Brooklyn presented to me, I knew this would be something that would be something that fit the way I present my work, and how I had always envisioned New York City from a personal standpoint.
From the redbrick houses, to the stillness of the neighbourhoods, this was a true juxtaposition the roaring beast that is Manhattan. The people of Brooklyn held an aura of class, their style, the way they walked, it exuded confidence, like they were the King and Queens of New York City.
Brooklyn felt like it was stuck in a time warp, from the past, with all the good parts from back then, and the best parts of today. Being in New York is one thing, but being there to capture something for someone, and then be able to present it as official work is something people can only dream of. capturing the culture of a place is even better, being able to be the unseen photographer, capturing a series of images of people making them immortal, preserving the class of Brooklyn was an honour.
BROOKLYN
With countless years of history the Pratt institute has become one of the most reputable fashion college and universities in the world. Not only for its creative ability, but the turnout of students who have gone on to create high end fashion for luxury brands. Being around such talent and enthusiasm for their specific art was a true blessing. viewing how each individual piece was created was a true honour to capture. The Students exuded confidence in their craft, with a focus I have never seen. A place so messy, yet so organised, ideas could be seen all around the room, no two concept boards the same. some designs finished, some just being started, it was no doubt I I was viewing future masters of the fashion industry.
THE PRATT INSTITUTE
After being fortunate enough to photograph the students at work, I had the opportunity to photograph one of the students work at their midterm examination point. Sara had based her work around 80s New York City, where her garments would have weird and wonderful patterns to fit her overall design. with bright whites and flowing material it really captured an elegance with the weird and wonderfulness of the decade it was representing. I had two minuets to photograph and capture a small video of the outfit.
This was an extremely fascinating opportunity to be granted, being able to work with the Pratt institute in the greatest city in the world. Being able to collaborate with different worms of talent was direct a shoot for upcoming designers of the fashion industry, was an honour and pleasure that I will carry with me forever, a dream that I wanted to accomplish from a young age, a dream that had just been fulfilled.
